Philip Harris is a wealthy British businessman, with an estimated personal wealth of around £285 million.
Harris found money as founder of Carpetright, and donated over half a million of his riches to the Conservative Party. David Cameron, who received donations from Philip Harris, described the Conservative Lord as a ‘great friend’ and supporter.
Using his immense wealth, Harris founded the Harris Federation, a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) that operates 41 academies in and around London. While MATs are currently run on a not-for-profit basis, the likes of Harris are able to profit from lucrative business deals and contracts, such as the Microsoft cloud systems that the Harris Federation purchased in 2011. Furthermore, Harris’ MAT gains the rights to the land on which academies stand, even where this land is forcibly taken from local state schools against the majority will of parents.
